Ngarku’adlu (Lets Eat)

It has taken us a few weeks to write about our recent experience as curators for Adelaide Festivals Ngarku’adlu (Let’s Eat) celebrations. It took this long because we really needed time to reflect. It was such an extraordinary experience that putting it into words is actually quite difficult.

Over three days on Kaurna country, we (along with a huge team of amazing humans) put on four picnics at the University of Adelaide and three seven course dinners at the Museum of South Australia. Damien was Master of Ceremony for all events and helped to share the stories of many Indigenous businesses and amazing people that we have the privilege of working with at Warndu.

We spent four months sourcing the best Australian Native Foods from as many Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses as we could. Its was a joy connect with old friends and new ones during this process.

Our friends from Fervor Food in WA were employed to cook up a feast of the senses for our dinner guests, along with Indigenous hatted chef Clayton Donovan. 

Along with other suppliers of the event, Warndu and our Chefs spent the day visiting the Newchurch family in Port Victoria on Nurrunga country. We cooked together, learnt and harvested beautiful native greens for the dinners and picnic boxes. 

 

Along with amazing food so many of our friends that make incredible drinks supported the event too. A Native botanical Gin Bar thanks to Applewood, Dark Emu lager thanks to Uncle Bruce Pascoe and Sailors Grave Brewing, Wines from Alkina, Forage Supply Co. Harvest, Unico Zelo and d’Arenberg plus amazing non-alcoholic drinks from Etch Sparkling, LORE and Sobah.

Picnic boxes (1400+) of them were packed by us and over thirty volunteers (huge thanks to all of them). A carefully curated box of Native Australian goodies for our guests to taste new flavours and learn about our rich Indigenous culture. Not only did we share, we learnt so much and want to thank everyone involved for such an inspiring, amazing experience.

Join Warndu at the Village Market

April 10th 2021

A new community run market is kicking off next week in Warndu’s home, the Clare Valley. Along with food, wine, local goodies and music, Warndu will have a stall to share tastings and sell its entire range of Australian Native goodies.

We will also have signed copies of our book Warndu Mai for sale.
